Audio Tape & Reel Digitization
From old family cassettes tucked away in closets to professional open-reel recordings of past musical endeavors, magnetic tapes are fragile. Over time, these media degrade, risking the permanent loss of the voices and sounds they hold. At Kilobyteivore, we combine studio-grade equipment with meticulous technical expertise to migrate your irreplaceable audio archives into precise, modern digital formats.
The cornerstone of high-quality audio digitization lies in the maintenance of the playback decks and the rigorous management of signal noise during conversion. For open-reel and vintage cassettes, a single speck of dust on the playback head or a slight misalignment in tape tension can drastically alter the resulting sound quality. We utilize professional decks optimized for each specific format, ensuring that the atmosphere and dynamics of the original recording are preserved without compromise in high-definition WAV or MP3 formats.
Whether it is the singing voice of a family member, the legacy of a departed loved one, or early demo recordings of a musician, these are "one-of-a-kind" sounds that cannot be re-recorded. We view our work not as simple data conversion, but as a critical archival process that bridges the gap between sonic memories and the future. Every single tape is handled with a commitment to preservation and technical accuracy.
Our Digitization Process
01. Intake and Condition Assessment
We perform a detailed physical inspection of each tape to check for mold, tangles, or degradation, allowing us to determine the safest and most effective playback strategy.
02. Azimuth Adjustment and Playback
Our engineers adjust the playback head's azimuth for each tape to minimize phase shift and ensure a high frequency response before recording begins.
03. Digital Conversion and Optimization
Using high-precision AD converters, we digitize the audio at your chosen sampling rate while filtering out unnecessary hum and electrical interference.
04. Quality Control and Delivery
Every file undergoes a full review to ensure there are no dropouts or unexpected noise spikes before the data is delivered via USB or secure cloud link.
Who is this service for?
Our services cater to a wide range of clients, from those who simply want to "hear their tapes again" to archivists seeking high-fidelity preservation. This includes families organizing old home recordings, musicians digitizing studio tapes for remastering, or small organizations preserving historical audio documents.
We strongly recommend immediate digitization for those owning open-reel tapes. The availability of working playback hardware is declining rapidly. Furthermore, magnetic tape has a finite lifespan; once "sticky-shed syndrome" (hydrolysis) occurs, the tape can become unplayable without specialized baking treatments.
Technical Approach and Methodology
Our priority is to recreate the original timbre of the recording. For compact cassettes, we select decks with highly stable drive systems to minimize wow and flutter. For open-reel tapes, we strictly manage reel rotation speeds to prevent pitch drift, ensuring the audio remains true to its original state.
We implement precise gain staging to prevent clipping (distortion) while maintaining a healthy signal-to-noise ratio. This creates a flexible master file that allows for easier volume normalization or targeted noise reduction in post-production if the client chooses.
What you should prepare
To ensure a smooth workflow, we ask clients to provide a list of labels found on the tapes (dates, content, speakers). If the handwriting on the tape has faded, this list becomes essential for naming the resulting digital files accurately.
Please notify us if you only require specific segments of a tape to be digitized or if you wish to preserve certain environmental noises. If the tape is physically damaged (e.g., snapped), please inform us; we can carefully splice the tape using professional splicing blocks before attempting playback.
Delivery and File Formats
We deliver your audio in formats tailored to your needs. For archival purposes, we recommend uncompressed WAV files (44.1kHz/16-bit or higher). For those who prefer easy playback on smartphones or PCs, high-bitrate MP3 files are available.
Delivery is handled via USB flash drive or a secure, time-limited cloud download link. Files are organized based on your provided list (e.g., "Date_Content.wav"), making it easy to navigate your archive immediately upon receipt.
Timeline and Turnaround
Our standard turnaround time is approximately 14 days from the date of receipt. This period accounts for physical inspection, azimuth calibration, and the final quality check. For large volumes of tapes, we process them in batches and provide status updates.
For urgent requests, we offer an express service at a 50% surcharge of the standard fee. Specific timelines are provided after we assess the quantity and physical condition of the media.
What is NOT included
Our primary goal is "analog-to-digital conversion." Advanced audio restoration—such as recovering sounds that have completely vanished or the total removal of severe background noise—is a separate service available under our "AV Digital Restoration" menu. Standard digitization includes basic level optimization only.
In accordance with copyright laws, we strictly refuse to duplicate commercially released music cassettes or movie soundtracks. We only process private recordings or materials for which the client holds the legal rights.
Pricing and Consumption Tax
Pricing is calculated on a "per tape" basis. Regardless of the tape length, one physical reel or cassette is counted as one unit. All displayed prices include the 10% consumption tax (消費税) as required by Japanese law.
For B2B (corporate) clients, payment terms are 30 days from the date of invoice. For orders sent via mail, return shipping costs are the responsibility of the client.

Frequently Asked Questions
My tapes are very old; can they still be played?
In most cases, yes. However, if there is severe degradation or mold, pre-cleaning or specialized treatment may be required. We will assess the condition first and discuss the options with you.
I don't know the speed (ips) of my open-reel tape. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Our engineers analyze the audio waveforms and tape characteristics to determine the correct playback speed before digitization.
How will I receive the digital files?
You can choose between a USB flash drive or a secure cloud storage download link. Please specify your preference when placing the order.
To learn more about the ways to preserve your audio data, please read our guide "Best Storage Formats for Family Archives." Please note that all orders are subject to our Terms.
