Professional Film & Slide Scanning
Bring new light to your dormant negatives and positive slides. Using professional high-definition scanners, we restore faded memories into vivid, permanent digital archives.
Whether they are tucked away in a family closet or stored in old albums, 35mm films and slides are subject to the inevitable decay of time. From the onset of vinegar syndrome to the gradual fading of organic dyes, these physical assets face a permanent risk of loss. Digitization is more than just creating a copy; it is a critical act of preservation, ensuring that your family's visual history is secured for future generations.
At Kilobyteivore, our specialists in photographic archiving apply precise exposure and color correction to every single frame. We extract a high dynamic range that is often impossible to achieve with consumer-grade scanners, meticulously recovering details from deep shadows and bright highlights. By employing professional handling techniques, we minimize physical stress on the medium, protecting your original films while converting them into high-fidelity digital assets.
The Digitization Process
Intake and Condition Assessment
Upon receiving your films, we conduct a detailed audit of the quantity, format (negative or positive), and physical state, checking for mold or shrinkage to create a tailored processing plan.
Precision Cleaning
Before scanning, we use specialized air dusters and lint-free cloths to carefully remove static-attracted dust and surface contaminants, ensuring a clean, noise-free image.
High-Resolution Scanning
We scan at an optical resolution of up to 6400 dpi. Light sources are adjusted based on the film's specific characteristics to generate digital data with rich tonal gradations.
Color Correction and Delivery
We correct digital color casts and adjust tones for natural accuracy before exporting the files in your chosen format (JPEG/TIFF) for secure delivery.
Who This Service Is For
Our service is designed for those who prioritize archival quality over simple convenience. We frequently assist clients in the following situations:
- Families wishing to view 35mm films shot by parents or grandparents on modern large screens.
- Collectors of old positive slides who want to create high-quality photo books or digital exhibitions.
- Individuals with deteriorating films who require professional handling to rescue images before they vanish.
- Users requiring high-resolution TIFF files for future large-format printing or professional editing.
- People looking to organize vast physical archives to reduce storage space while maintaining access.
Our Commitment to Technical Quality
The most critical factor in film scanning is the preservation of the dynamic range. Negative films, in particular, often feature extreme contrasts between highlights and shadows; low-end scanners frequently result in "blown-out" whites or "crushed" blacks. Our studio utilizes professional sensors capable of capturing the full latent information embedded in the emulsion.
We also dedicate significant time to post-processing. Rather than relying on aggressive automatic corrections, we manually adjust color temperature to preserve the original atmosphere of the era. Every file is rigorously inspected by Studio Manager Daisuke Mori and Quality Control Engineer Tomoko Watanabe to ensure it meets our archival standards before final delivery.
How to Prepare Your Materials
To ensure the most efficient workflow and accurate naming, we ask our clients to consider the following:
- Organization: If possible, include notes regarding the year or location of the photos. We can reflect this information in the final filenames.
- Packaging: When shipping, please use sufficient cushioning to prevent the films from shifting and scratching during transit.
- Format Selection: Decide between JPEG (versatile, lightweight) or TIFF (lossless, high-quality for editing) prior to the start of the project.
What You Receive
Once the process is complete, you will receive the following deliverables:
- Digital Files: High-resolution images in your selected format (JPEG or TIFF).
- Systematic Naming: Files named according to the management number assigned at intake (e.g., KLBT_001_01.jpg).
- Original Media: All original films and slides are returned in their original condition.
- Cloud Access: A secure download link provided for a limited time for immediate verification.
Turnaround and Scheduling
The standard turnaround time is approximately 14 business days from the date of receipt. This may vary depending on the volume of the archive or the need for specialized mold removal. For urgent projects, we offer an express service at a 50% surcharge. A precise schedule will be provided during the estimation phase.
What Is Not Included
To maintain transparency, please note that the following services are not included in the standard scanning fee:
