Pricing Guide
Understanding Pricing and Estimates for Digitization
When digitizing films and slides filled with precious memories, the most common question is "how much will it actually cost?" At Kilobyteivore, we eliminate opaque surcharges and employ a pricing system based on clear, objective standards. This guide explains how we calculate scanning fees and the relationship between resolution and quality.
The cost of film scanning is not determined by the number of frames alone. It depends on the precision of the equipment used, the output resolution of the data, and the physical condition of the film. In our studio located in the quiet district of Kita-ku, Osaka, we handle every single frame with care to ensure an accurate digital conversion.
1. Structure of Basic Fees
Our basic pricing is set per "roll (up to 36 frames)." This unit exists because loading a film into the scanner and performing the necessary alignment (centering and flattening) requires a consistent amount of manual labor regardless of the frame count.
For example, for 35mm negative film, the price per roll is subject to the 10% consumption tax (消費税). Even for small quantities, we perform a full calibration of our high-end equipment, which is why we maintain this basic unit. For clients with large archives, bulk requests often result in more efficient processing.
2. Resolution and Price Correlation
The most critical concept in digitization is "dpi" (dots per inch). Kilobyteivore supports high-definition scanning up to 6400 dpi.
If your goal is standard photo printing or web viewing, standard resolution is typically sufficient. However, if you plan for large-format printing in the future or wish to zoom in on tiny details within a photo, a higher resolution setting is required. While increasing resolution increases data processing time and storage requirements, our studio includes a professional high-quality setting in our standard base price to ensure longevity.
3. Variables Based on Film Condition
Not all films arrive in the same condition. Due to aging and environmental exposure, certain cases require additional treatment, which may affect the final estimate:
- Heavy Dust or Grime: Requires careful cleaning with specialized tools before scanning to avoid permanent artifacts.
- Film Shrinkage or Warping: Common in very old films; these require manual alignment and slower feed speeds.
- Mold Growth: Physical removal may be necessary. Since aggressive cleaning can damage the emulsion, professional judgment is required.
For detailed information on mold issues, please refer to our specialized guide: "Moldy Film: Possibilities for Rescue."
4. Estimation Checklist
Checking the following items before your request allows us to provide a more accurate and smooth estimate.
| Check Item | Details | Impact on Price |
|---|---|---|
| Film Type | 35mm / Medium Format / Slides | Determines base unit price |
| Quantity | Total number of rolls or frames | Determines total cost |
| Output Format | JPEG / TIFF | Affects storage and delivery |
| Condition | Presence of mold, creases, or dirt | Potential special treatment fee |
5. Local Pickup and Shipping in Kita-ku, Osaka
Our studio is located in Kita-ku, Osaka. For those living or working nearby, bringing your materials in person reduces the risks and costs associated with shipping. We are within walking distance of Yodoyabashi Station, allowing for face-to-face consultations regarding your archive.
For clients sending materials by mail, we strongly recommend including shipping insurance. Since we handle irreplaceable original films, precautions against accidents are essential. While shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer, we can discuss secure delivery methods (such as registered mail) for the return of your originals.
6. Payment and Turnaround
Once an order is confirmed, we generally request a 30% deposit. This secures the equipment and confirms your slot in our production schedule. The remaining balance is paid upon delivery of the digitized files.
Our average turnaround time is 14 days. For urgent requests, an express service is available for an additional fee (50% increase over standard rates). Please note that if the film condition is severely degraded, we may extend the processing time to prioritize the safety of your originals.
Summary: Ensuring Quality Digitization
Digitization is a one-time process that creates a permanent record. Therefore, it is important to choose a studio with the right equipment and expertise rather than focusing solely on the lowest price. At Kilobyteivore, we pursue honest pricing and high standards of quality to connect your memories to the next generation.
