Home Movie Film Digitization

Convert your cherished 8mm and Super 8 films, hidden away in storage, into high-definition digital data compatible with modern devices. Preserve the family memories etched in celluloid for the next generation before physical degradation becomes irreversible.

Macro shot of a Super 8 movie film reel showing the celluloid texture.

Home movie films, widely popular in the 20th century, are subject to inevitable physical decay over time. This includes acetic acid degradation (vinegar syndrome), mold growth, and severe color fading. Once the image on the celluloid is lost or the film becomes brittle, complete restoration is extremely difficult. The most reliable method of preservation is to create a digital archive while the footage is still viable and playback equipment is available.

At Kilobyteivore, we carefully diagnose every single reel to ensure the safest handling. Using professional scanners that maintain precise tension, we convert your analog memories into a digital format. Our goal is not just a simple data transfer, but an optimization that retains the unique texture and grain of the original film while ensuring a comfortable viewing experience on modern displays. All work is performed by experienced engineers at our studio in Kita-ku, Osaka.

Our Digitization Process

01

Diagnosis and Cleaning

We inspect the physical condition of the film, checking for mold, the strength of splices, and the overall tension of the reel. If necessary, we perform surface dust removal to ensure the film can safely pass through the scanner.

02

High-Definition Scanning

Using dedicated equipment tailored to the specific film gauge (8mm or Super 8), we capture each frame individually. We meticulously adjust exposure settings to minimize blown-out highlights or crushed blacks.

03

Post-Processing and Optimization

We fine-tune the color balance to bring the footage closer to its original natural hues. We also apply stabilization to reduce the characteristic flickering and shaking of old home movies, making the result easier to watch.

04

Export and Delivery

The final footage is encoded into a widely compatible MP4 format (H.264) and delivered via cloud storage or USB. Your original films are carefully repacked and returned to you immediately after the process.

Who is this service for?

Our home movie digitization service is designed for several specific needs. First, for those who have discovered old film reels while cleaning out a family home and wish to see the content but no longer own a projector. Second, for families preparing for weddings, milestone birthdays (such as Koki or Kiju celebrations), or anniversaries where childhood footage is needed for screen projection. Third, for those who have noticed the onset of degradation—such as color shifting or mold—and want to secure the data before the film is lost forever. Finally, we serve those who wish to build a systematic, professional digital archive of their family history.

Technical Approach and Quality Control

Our studio prioritizes the physical integrity of the film above all else. Old celluloid is incredibly fragile; applying excessive force during playback can lead to breakage or tearing. Therefore, our specialists first conduct a manual physical check. If splices have degraded, we reinforce them with professional archival tape. During the scanning phase, we use settings that preserve the organic grain of the film while reducing electronic noise. The final output is a Full HD equivalent MP4, ensuring that your memories look great on smartphones, tablets, PCs, and smart TVs.

What to Prepare for Your Order

When requesting digitization, we ask that you prepare the following. If you have notes regarding the content of the reels (year of filming, location, people appearing), please provide them so we can reflect this in the file naming. If you have multiple reels, please arrange them in the desired chronological order if possible. For orders sent via mail, we request strict packaging with ample cushioning to prevent the film from unraveling during transit. Please note that films in extremely poor condition (severe mold or fusion) may require a separate diagnostic fee, which we will discuss prior to starting work.

Delivery and Receipt

Upon completion, you will receive high-quality MP4 files. File names are assigned based on your specifications or the reel numbers for easy identification. We maintain a backup of your data on our secure studio servers for 30 days after delivery to protect against accidental loss. Original films are returned promptly. You may choose to collect your materials in person at our Kita-ku studio in Osaka or receive them via courier (shipping fees apply separately).

Turnaround and Scheduling

The standard turnaround time is approximately 14 business days from the date of receipt. However, this may vary depending on the total length of the film, its physical condition, and current studio volume. For urgent requests, we offer an express service for an additional fee (50% increase over standard rates). For B2B contracts (corporate or organizational clients), we apply a payment term of 30 days from the date of invoice. A specific schedule will be provided during the estimation phase.

What is NOT Included

Certain cases fall outside the scope of this service. First, we strictly decline the copying of commercially produced movies, music videos, or any content protected by copyright. Second, we cannot accept films that have completely fused together or those in a state of extreme chemical decomposition where the material crumbles upon touch, as the risk of destruction is too high. Third, advanced special effects or professional cinema-grade color grading are not included in this standard service (please inquire about our "AV Digital Restoration" for such needs).

Pricing and Consumption Tax

Pricing is calculated based on the actual length of the film in meters. The total cost is the base rate multiplied by the measured length. In accordance with Japanese tax law, all displayed prices include the 10% Consumption Tax (消費税). The final invoice is calculated based on the tax-exclusive price with the tax added at the end. Please refer to the table below for details.

Service Item Unit Price (Excl. Tax) Price (Incl. 10% 消費税)
Home Movie Film (8mm / Super 8) 1 Meter 1,000 JPY 1,100 JPY

Depending on the condition of the film, standard digitization may not yield satisfactory image quality. Specifically, if mold is present or severe fading has occurred, a more specialized approach is required. For more information, please refer to our guide "Moldy Film: Possibilities for Rescue".

By placing an order, you agree to our Terms of Service. We specifically ask you to review the sections regarding ownership rights of the materials and the inherent risks associated with the physical degradation of old celluloid.

Frequently Asked Questions

My films are very old; is there a risk they might break?

Because old film is inherently brittle, the risk can never be zero. However, our studio uses a precision-controlled tension system that avoids putting unnecessary stress on the material. We also verify the strength of all splices before scanning and reinforce them if necessary to ensure maximum safety.

In what format will I receive the digitized data?

We deliver in MP4 format (H.264 codec), which is the global standard for compatibility. This allows you to play the files on Windows PCs, Macs, iPhones, Android devices, and most smart TVs. We output at Full HD equivalent resolution to extract the maximum detail possible from the original film.

Why is the price per meter instead of per reel?

The length of film on a reel varies significantly depending on the manufacturer and how it was wound. To ensure fair and transparent pricing, we calculate the cost based on the actual "length in meters" scanned. The final price is confirmed after the reels are measured upon receipt.

Can you digitize films that have mold on them?

Mild mold can typically be cleaned and digitized. However, if the mold has penetrated the emulsion layer or if the film has fused, some image loss may occur, and the process will take significantly longer. We will provide a full diagnosis upon receipt to let you know what is possible.

Turn your precious memories into digital data that will never fade.
