Video Tape Digitization
Transform your dormant VHS and 8mm tapes into high-definition digital data compatible with modern devices. We rescue fading memories from deteriorating magnetic tapes, ensuring your family history remains vivid for generations to come.
Video recordings stored on magnetic tape are subject to inevitable physical decay. Over time, the magnetic layer degrades, leading to signal loss, the growth of mold, and tape stretching. Once these physical damages reach a critical point, the data can be lost forever, as modern recovery techniques have limits when the physical medium is destroyed. At Kilobyteivore, we utilize professional-grade capture hardware and experienced engineers to extract the maximum possible information from your originals, converting them into stable, high-quality digital files.
Our approach goes beyond simple data conversion; we view this as the preservation of a legacy. Whether it is a wedding from thirty years ago, a child's first steps, or an irreplaceable family trip, these moments deserve to be accessible. By migrating your archives to a digital format, you can easily share and view these memories on smartphones, tablets, and PCs. Operating from our studio in Kita-ku, Osaka, we treat every single tape with the utmost care and technical precision.
The Digitization Process
01. Intake and Inspection
Every tape is individually inspected upon arrival. We check for mold, tape slack, and physical damage to select the most appropriate playback deck and cleaning method for that specific medium.
02. Optimized Capture
Depending on the format (VHS, Hi8, MiniDV, etc.), we configure the signal settings to ensure high fidelity. We manually adjust tracking to minimize noise and ensure a stable image output.
03. Encoding and File Creation
The captured raw signal is converted into the widely compatible MP4 H.264 Full HD format. Files are named according to your provided list to ensure your archive remains organized.
04. Delivery and Return
Completed data is delivered via secure cloud storage or physical media. Simultaneously, your original tapes are carefully packed and returned to you, as we never retain originals longer than necessary.
Who is This Service For?
Our digitization service is designed for those facing the challenge of obsolete media. Many families find themselves with boxes of tapes in storage but no working VCR or camcorder to play them. As modern televisions and computers have removed analog input ports, creating a viewing environment at home has become nearly impossible for the average user.
We also strongly recommend this service for those who have noticed "snow" or tracking lines appearing in their videos. Magnetic tape degradation is a slow but certain process; by digitizing now, you stop the clock on further loss. Furthermore, for those wishing to create a digital family archive that can be passed from parents to children and grandchildren, this is an efficient and reliable method of preservation.
Technical Details and Quality Standards
At Kilobyteivore, we do not simply press a record button. Our engineers perform micro-adjustments to the tracking and head alignment for each tape to minimize visual artifacts. Older tapes often suffer from unstable transport speeds; therefore, our specialists monitor the capture process in real-time to intervene if the tape begins to snag or flutter.
We utilize the MP4 (H.264) format because it offers a balanced ratio between visual quality and file size, ensuring that your videos play smoothly on almost any device without requiring specialized software. We upscale the output to Full HD equivalents, aiming for a quality that remains watchable and clear even on large modern displays.
What to Prepare for Your Order
To ensure a smooth workflow, we ask our clients to prepare their materials in a specific way. If possible, please group your tapes by format (e.g., all VHS together, all MiniDV together). Additionally, providing a simple list—such as "1995 Wedding," "1998 Summer Trip"—helps us name your files accurately during the encoding phase.
If tape labels are missing or illegible, we will assign temporary identification numbers and provide a list for your review. When shipping your tapes, please use ample cushioning material. Physical shocks during transit can cause tape breakage, which directly impacts the success of the digitization. For detailed instructions, please see our Guide to Preparing Tapes for Digitization.
Delivery and Final Output
Once the process is complete, you will receive your data as high-quality MP4 files. By default, we provide a secure download link via cloud storage. This link is valid for a limited period, during which we request that you save the files to your own local storage or backup drives.
Upon request, we can also write the data to physical media such as USB flash drives. Files are organized as "Date_EventName.mp4" based on your instructions. Your original tapes are returned in their original state; the digitization process is non-destructive and does not alter the content of your physical tapes.
Turnaround Time and Scheduling
Our standard turnaround time is approximately 14 business days from the date of receipt. Because we employ a craftsman-like approach—inspecting and configuring each tape individually rather than using automated mass-processing—this time is necessary to ensure quality. For urgent requests, we offer an express service for an additional fee to shorten the delivery window.
For large archives (exceeding 50 tapes), please contact us in advance to discuss a custom schedule. We can prioritize specific tapes if you need certain memories sooner than others. Detailed regulations regarding delivery and deadlines can be found in our Terms.
What is Not Included
Our service focuses on the "analog-to-digital conversion" of signals. The following are not included in the standard service: first, we strictly refuse to copy commercially produced movies, music videos, or any copyrighted material in accordance with Japanese law and company policy. We only digitize personal home videos.
Secondly, extreme physical repairs—such as splicing severely snapped tapes or treating tapes that have completely fused into a solid block—are not part of the standard fee. In such cases, we will assess the tape and either suggest a specialized restoration expert or attempt a "best-effort" rescue. Advanced color restoration or professional editing (cutting and titling) is available as a separate service under our "AV Digital Restoration" option.
Pricing and Consumption Tax (消費税)
Pricing is calculated based on the number of tapes processed. Our base rates are listed as "Excluding Tax," and the mandatory 10% Consumption Tax (消費税) is added to the final total. For example, a VHS tape priced at ¥4,000 (Excl. Tax) will result in a final price of ¥4,400 (Incl. Tax). All quotes provided will clearly state both figures for transparency.
For bulk orders or B2B requests (such as corporate archives), we provide custom quotes. For inquiries regarding payment methods or invoicing, please use our Contact form.

Frequently Asked Questions
My tapes have mold on them. Can they still be digitized?
Mild mold can often be treated with professional cleaning before capture. However, if the mold is severe or the tape has become sticky/fused, attempting playback can risk snapping the tape. We will inspect the media first and inform you if a rescue is possible.
What will the final image quality be?
We maintain the maximum resolution inherent to the analog tape. By outputting in MP4 Full HD, the footage remains clear when viewed on modern screens, preserving the authentic atmosphere of the original recording without unnatural blurring.
How do I receive my digital files?
We typically provide a secure cloud storage download link. You can save the files directly to your computer or smartphone. If you prefer delivery on a USB drive, this is available as an optional add-on.
Can I request the digitization of just one single tape?
Yes, we accept orders starting from a single tape. We understand that some memories are held on just one specific recording. However, due to shipping costs, we generally recommend grouping several tapes together.
